Movie Review #20: The Woman in Black

It took me almost an entire week to see this movie and that made me sad. I was so excited to see Harry Potter fight some ghosts. I was sure this was going to be WICKED! I know I still have Chronicle to see and then on Friday Safe House is coming out and then the next Friday is Ghost Rider 2. I’m going to watch the crap out of all of those movies.

But now is not the time for all of that. Now is the time for The Woman in Black.

Now, The Woman in Black is an incredibly simple movie. There is a scary ass ghost that kills if anyone sees her. Then Daniel Radcliff shows up and is all “I don’t care. I’m gonna go hang out in the house the ghost lives in” and the people of the town are like “uh, dude… bad idea.” It turns out… it was a bad idea.

This movie belongs with some of the best Haunted House movies of all time. What I love about it is that they gave a really good reason for Radcliff to have to be there. It wasn’t like “oh we’re some horny teens that want to have a romp in the local haunted house”. There’s no half-assed comedy in this movie. It’s all scares and reality.

There are some great moments in this movie too. I really love some of the scares. It’s easy to scare with something hoping around a corner or making a loud noise off screen. That’s easy, and believe me, this movie has plenty of those. But the two biggest scares I can remember were more about me not being willing to look any more. They were showing me the scary thing and I just wasn’t willing to keep going. Thats a really successful scare.

I’m sure a question on many people’s mind is how much time do you spend thinking about how he’s Harry Potter. I thought about it a lot in the first 15-20 minutes. But then he got to the haunted house and I was pretty much over it. I do think that he looked significantly different. He didn’t really look like he was old enough to have a 5 year old son, but I guess people had kids earlier back in the day. Regardless, my opinion is that he sucessfully overcame the Harry Potter Itis.

So, i highly suggest this one. Have you seen it? Any opinions?

  1. I saw the film yesterday. It was so creepy! :-)

I am so excited to see this movie! Now that you’ve given it a good review, I’m even more pumped!

  3. I agree with what you said, but I was somewhat disappointed that they used loud noises for most of the scares when they really didn’t need to. I thought that Daniel Radcliffe did a great job though.
