You are currently browsing the category archive for the 'Academy Awards' category.

That’s right folks!  You have voted and voted well and YOU have decided which are the two best Best Picture winners of all time.  It was a great tournament and we learned more than you may think.  Most importantly, we got it done in time so that on Sunday, when the 81st Academy Awards occurs, you will be able to hold you head high, knowing that you have participated in the process.  This last poll is all you need to vote on.  Everyone you know needs to vote on it.  All of you that have voted even once need to stop by, make a vote, tell a friend (but only if they agree with you, ;) ) and then we will have the results we’ve wanted: (Make Sure to check all of the results of the tournament here!)

The Godfather: Part II
Current Ranking: 5
PRO The Cast + Deniro + Vegas + Cuba:
+ So take the greatest film of all time. Got it in your head. Then, let it simmer. Let the people of the world really wrap their heads around it. Then, make it that much better. Take the small, unique scope and widen it to proportions that no film has ever equaled. Take the greatest cast of all time and add one of the world’s greatest actors. That’s what makes Godfather II unique and greater than it’s predecessor. It takes what seemingly could not possibly be improved upon and does just that. It takes a film that broke ground to an astonishing level and said that better could be given. It’s great to know that the greatest sequel of all time is thus the greatest film as well.

ANTI The Original:
- For the exact reasons above, This film just can’t hold up against Godfather II. It was a great film, and it broke ground, but it was the ground that was established by this film that Godfather II came along and broke as well. This movie may be the pillar, but Godfather II is the pinnacle. You have to realize that Godfather 1 is the building block, but only for the purpose of reaching that top of the mountain.

The Godfather
Current Ranking: 3
PRO most Kick Ass Original Film of All-Time:
+ The original. The standard. it’s easy to make the argument of the mountain top and the pillars, but that is too simplistic. That pillar didn’t just create Godfather II, it created an entire GENRE! A sequel could never ever live up to that standard.

ANTI Sequels:
- It will always be a sequel. Think about it this way. Can you watch Godfather II by itself? Yes, but will you really fully understand it? No. Now think about it in reverse. See. The sequel problem will always be there

Ok, make your voice heard. Vote and comment!

The poll is closed.  A great 4 days of voting, but today results had to be tabulated!  And…..

The Godfather: Part II (1974) 5 4 The Godfather (1972)

We did it everyone!  We have decided what the greatest Best Picture of all time is and that movie is The Godfather: Part II.  It was a close one, it was a long and winding road, but the journey is over and we have accomplished something great.  Just in time too.  The Academy Awards are Sunday and you will know the rankings of all of the Best Pictures as we go into showing.  Here is the finalized tournament brackets.  In addition, here are the rankings that have resulted from the tournament.  Now, that being said, the work has only just begun.  We know so little of how these movies should be ranked 2-80.  Lets get to work on that as well, don’t you think?

Thank you so much for all of your votes.  You have done a great job.  Please keep participating and happy voting!

Best Picture Tournament: Day 21: Casablanca vs. The Godfather

Casablanca
Current Ranking: 10
PRO Classic Bogie and Classic Film:
+ This is well known to be one of the greatest movies of all time. You know back in the day they had a bad habit of not giving the best film the Best Picture award. But this is one that deserved it and got it. Give it on up to one of greatest films (with AMC’s greatest quote) of all time

ANTI Gangster Boom Shoot Die Boom:
- Here’s a movie about a guy shooting a bunch of people, his brother gets killed, his dad almost dies and he is a super whiny baby. What a joke. Just because it has an amazing cast. Not good enough.

The Godfather
Current Ranking: 3
PRO Pacino/Brando Kicking Ass:
+ I dont even know how to defend this movie. It’s just better. Movies are defined based upon how good they are in comparison to this movie. It’s the most epic, brilliantly shot, wonderfully told movie of all time. You can’t resist it.

ANTI Boring Old Black and White:
- This movie hasn’t been good since color came to the big screen. Its the greatest film, if we never left the 50s. But since we did, and we’ve evolved as film makers, you have to get rid of this movie and move on with a film that has integrity and such.

Ok, make your voice heard. Vote and comment!

Casablanca – 4  vs.  The Godfather (1972) – 7

Best Picture Tournament: Day 20: Schindler’s List vs. The Godfather: Part II

Schindler’s List
Current Ranking: 8
PRO Speilberg’s Big Vision:
+ Steve Speilberg’s visionary film, one of the greatest of all time, really aught to be given its place as the champion of this tourney. Ben Kingsley, Liam Neelson, Ralph Feinnes. It’s a comperable list, but more importantly, its an important story that has never and hopefully never will be told with such passion and reality.

ANTI Bloated Gangstas shoot em up violence:
- Ok, so some gangster bullies the shit out of an entire city, and then his bratty kids try to take over the rest of the world from cuba to vegas. And one of them treats hot ass Diane Keaton like shit. Then two of them kiss. Then its over. A lot of people die.

The Godfather: Part II
Current Ranking: 5
PRO Pacino, Brando, Deniro:
+ Wow, this movie blows minds. It’s epic, its awesome, its the greatest sequel of all time without a doubt. Not to mention the fact that the cast is the absolute greatest of all time. Think about it. They made Godfather, then they said, who’s missing from this movie? Oh, yeah, Robert Deniro. Ok, well we’ll get him in there somehow. Brillant. The greatest film of all time. Hands down.

ANTI Gruesome over the top exploitation:
- Ok, the fact is that its more important for this movie to be at the top of the list of history movies, I get that. But it isn’t a better film than Godfather 2. No way. It’s a great story, but Godfather is that much better. Schindler’s List is too varied, too wild, too hard to handle. Dont make me cry movie! make me feel other awesome things!

Ok, make your voice heard. Vote and comment

RESULTS ARE IN!

Schindler’s List – 4  v  The Godfather: Part II – 7

Yes, thats right. You the people have decided who will win the academy awards next sunday. It wont be decided by the academy. It was already decided by you.  Check out the entire results here!

Here are your final winners:

Best Picture: Slumdog Millionaire

Best Director: Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire

Best Actor: Mickey Roarke, The Wrestler

Best Actress: Meryl Streep, Doubt

Thanks for your votes.  Enjoy watching the show, but you already know the results

OK, so, you have finalized the best actress fight with Meryl Streep on top.  I’ll get on telling the academy what you have decided.  Then you decided who won the best Actor fight.  You gave it to Mr. Mickey Rourke.  A comeback for the ages, as they say.  Then you went ahead and told me who should win the Best Picture award.  Slumdog Millionaire should win that award according to what you have to say.  Lastly, you told me who won best Director.  You said that Danny Boyle should win that award and I will make it a point to tell the entire world that fact.

So, you may be saying to yourself, “if Danny Boyle won the award, why do we need to have another fight about this?”  Well, remember back on day 1 when we had that hideous thing that i really hate having in The Movie Fight, A TIE!  Well, I let it go because, based upon the results of the other fights, it was within the realm of possibilities, though ever so unlikely, that the rankings would make it easy for us not to have to have an answer to that fight.  That somewhat complicated and unlikely outcome did not come to be, which is what probability called for, non-surprisingly.  Therefore, I need you to re-fight this fight.  Otherwise, I will never know which director came in second this year.

The results are in. You have decided the final fight in the director fight and thus the final fight in the 81st Academy Awards fight.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (David Fincher) 2 – Frost/Nixon (Ron Howard) 1

Hey folks. Ok, its time. You have to make sure to vote this round. This will be your only chance. Four fights. Thats all of em! You have to get your opinions out there. Did you know that if you add a comment, your voice will be heard even better. Everyone might just agree with you. That being said, make sure to vote on these Round 5 Fights. The Elite 8!

Results are in.  I hope you enjoyed voting on this round.  It went by really quickly, I’ll try to drag out the next week so you can have WAAAAY more fun!  Here’s a link to the final four and the tournament that has gotten us here:

Forrest Gump 3 4 Schindler’s List
Silence of the Lambs 1 5 The Godfather: Part II
Lawrence of Arabia 2 3 Casablanca
The Godfather 4 1 The Apartment

Hey all. So, I guess I’m a complete idiot. I don’t know why I did it, but I accidentally put Driving Miss Daisy in the fight against Braveheart. This is essentially a useless fight because it was Forrest Gump that had advanced last round, not Driving Miss Daisy. So, we are kind of in a tight spot. We need to get Braveheart v Forrest Gump voted upon as quickly as we can. Also, it will have to be done quickly, so I am going to leave it up long enough for 10 votes to happen and if i get that many votes, We can pull it down before the usual 4 day waiting period.

Please help me out on this one. Stop by and vote, make sure some people you know come by and vote. Sorry about this one, but we should be able to finish this fight and move on efficiently soon enough…

thanks for the votes everyone. Lets get the 5th round of this tournament underway!!!

So, in day 1 we got some work done.  Rankings were made and they were fairly close.  But there was a tie.  Then, in day 2, the fights did magnificantly, solidifying all of the rankings, except for one pesky problem: the tie!  The tie must redone!  We need to decide which movie belongs in second place.  So for the sake of my sanity and for the sake of something to do, I ask you to vote on this fight again.  And please, don’t make it a tie again!

The Results are in:  thanks a lot.  This fight being finished means that this poll is finished!

ok, here are the results:

Milk 2 1 The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Hey Folks. Thanks for all of your votes and it looks fairly likely that we will have all of these fights over with by the time the academy awards occurs in mid february. That being said, you guys and gals did a great job on the Best Picture fights from last week, but there is always room for more. Here is a link to the rankings as they are now: 81st Academy Awards

Here are the results that you created in the last set of polls:

The Reader 1 4 Frost/Nixon
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 3 6 Milk
The Reader 1 6 Slumdog Millionaire
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 2 6 Slumdog Millionaire
Frost/Nixon 3 5 Milk

Ok, thanks to those results, we still have a few questions left that need to be answered:

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 3 0 The Reader
Frost/Nixon 1 2 The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Slumdog Millionaire 2 1 Milk

Hey buddies.  Well in the first round of the 2008 Directors fight, we had some interesting results.  A tie, a three win movie, and some opportunities for additional fights.  Its an interesting dilemma I put myself in with ties.  Usually I try to get someone to break the tie so I dont have to think, but screw that.  If you can’t decide this time, we’ll just decide at some other time.  Maybe, it wont even be necessary (though that seems unlikely and technically illogical).  Anyway, thanks to that first set of fights,  I have a few more for you now:

Results are in. Sorry for being a little late, but it gave you more time to vote. So the results will be posted here. You can see what the rankings are here! In the meantime, here’s your rankings.

Slumdog Millionaire 3 2 Frost/Nixon
The Reader 1 3 The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 3 2 Milk
Milk 2 3 The Reader

Day 2 of Round 4 of the 1st Tournament of 2009. You have 4 more polls that you can vote on in this round and they are all here. Therefore, there are two posts, 8 fights for you to vote on in this round. Your votes are needed and I know you’ve seen these movies. Remember when we watched them together last summer?

OK, so, just as a refresher, here is the tournament as it stands now: The Best Picture Tournament! And… as you demanded… here are the last four fights:

Braveheart 2 8 Forrest Gump
Schindler’s List 4 3 Unforgiven
The French Connection 4 5 Silence of the Lambs
It Happened One Night 1 4 Lawrence of Arabia
Annie Hall 3 4 The Apartment
Frost/Nixon 1 8 Milk
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 4 3 Frost/Nixon
Milk 8 1 The Visitor
The Wrestler 7 0 The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Well folks, its time for some more Best Actor Polls. You all did an excellent job voting in the first group, but you made one mistake… There was a TIE! Not sure yet if a rematch will be in order, but for now, we’ve got a few more fights for you that might just bring us to the final standings.

Here are the current rankings (and the rankings in the other groups regarding the 81st Academy Awards):

Rank Name Wins Losses Win % Vdiff MF#
1 The Wrestler (Mickey Rourke) 3 0 100% 18 4.8
2 Milk (Sean Penn) 2 1 67% 8 1.8
3 The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Brad Pitt) 2 1 67% -1 0.9
4 Frost/Nixon (Frank Langella) 1 3 25% -9 -2.9
5 The Visitor (Richard Jenkins) 0 3 0% -16 -4.6

The results of these fights were as follows:

Welcome back to the Best Picture Tournament. Starting today, we are dealing with Round 4: THE SWEET SIXTEEN! You need to vote now and vote often. We really need to get as many people to vote now because these are the fights that really matter. Your job in addition to voting is to get one additional person to show up and vote. There are only two days worth of fights, so you better get your votes in while you can. OK, enough ranting and marketing, time for some polls:

Results are in (though with some controversy!). I accidentally made one fight Braveheart v Driving Miss Daisy, when it should have been Braveheart v Forrest Gump. Your chance to vote in that fight, to fix this issue, is here. That being said, the fight between Braveheart and Driving Miss Daisy wont go without use. Its a win for Braveheart and a loss for Driving Miss Daisy, so that will be taken into account in the long run, you’ll see. Anyway, here are your results:

The Godfather 8 3 No Country for Old Men
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King 4 5 Casablanca
The Godfather: Part II 6 3 American Beauty
Braveheart 6 2 Driving Miss Daisy

Hey, welcome back everyone.  Well, you’ve done a great job putting the ladies into the correct order, but I’d love to get this solidified.  We seem to know who’s at the top and the bottom, but lets solidify for good.  Two more polls today should do the trick (but I’m giving you 4!) and then we can comfortably give the awards:

OH and make sure you check out the current rankings here

Results are IN! Thanks to these results, as I thought, these rankings have been finalized!

The Reader 6 2 Rachel Getting Married
Rachel Getting Married 6 1 Frozen River
Changeling 4 3 Frozen River
Doubt 6 1 The Reader

Hey Folks,

Ok, today you get to the meat.  You get to start deciding the best picture at the 2009 Academy Awards.  Well, not really, I mean, you have nothing to do with it, but it would be nice to see if the Academy is following the general public’s opinion (though i guess that would make it the people’s choice awards).  Anyway, here are the five finalists and their five initial fights:

The results are in. We have the fights here:

The Reader 1 4 Frost/Nixon
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 3 6 Milk
The Reader 1 6 Slumdog Millionaire
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 2 6 Slumdog Millionaire
Frost/Nixon 3 5 Milk
