Posts Tagged ‘Rankings’

The cornerstone of The Movie Fight is our massive tournaments that determine how the overall rankings are going to stand. These tournaments are the best way to quickly put movies in the approximately correct places on our rankings. Oh! you want to see all of our official rankings. Well you can do so at this page! OFFICIAL RANKINGS GALORE!

However, the old method of doing these tournaments is simply not going to work anymore. It requires waaaaaaaaay too many polls and too much data and annoyingness. I loved every second of it, but honestly, I dont have the time for it anymore. Not only that, but it was always lacking the one thing I really wanted: Discussion. I wanted to be able to talk about these fights. I wanted people to argue for their cause. Specifically, I wanted to fight for my cause. That basically never happened. So, the old method is dead. I’m sorry my friends. BUT! I think I’ve discovered a great compromise that will serve to fix everything that ailes us…

Here’s how it’s going to work… I’m going to write a paragraph or two per fight. At the end of that paragraph, my vote will be named. My vote counts for 1.1. However, everyone of my readers is also granted a vote in every fight, but yours are only worth 1. In other words, I’m the tiebreaker. So, make your voice heard. You (along with at least one other person) may be able to overturn my vote. Or, if you agree with me, but 2 fools have out voted me, you can come to my rescue. This gives me the chance to sound off, a vote to automatically be cast, and the participation that I truly want to be available to everyone. Sound good?

Addendum: there will be times when the tournament requires that I include movies that I have not seen. I haven’t seen all of the movies in the world, though I’m trying. In the meantime, there might be times I have to make a vote when I haven’t seen both movies. In this case, I’m going to give myself only .9 of a vote. That way if I get a comment from someone with conviction that has seen the movie before, then their vote will count for more.

I was going to start with the tournament that we already began, the Horror Tournament… I know its a little out of season, but everyone likes talking about scary movies, right? Its a really easy genre to comprehend. Is it scary? Are there surprises? What makes a movie a horror movie vs a thriller? These topics will all be up for debate as the champion of the 150 movie Horror movie will be decided, right here, on The Movie Fight

Nap Movies: Movies that I had on for a significant period, but didn’t actually watch in any cognizant way. This is probably because I’ve seen it before and didn’t think too much of it the first time but figured would be mindless enough for me to ignore for an hour. It also might be because I’ve never heard of it before and don’t think enough of it to actually give it a fair shake.

We all do it. These movies deserve a special place in our hearts. They give us solace in a way their creators could not have possibly intended, but that the critics would never afford. Our new regular feature on The Movie Fight will be to discuss the movies that fit into this category and the benefits and horrors within. Whenever I watch one, it will be added to the list (but if you have some suggestions, I’ll be happy to add them as soon as I can). But in the case of “nap movies”, I’m not going to be discussing the actual merits of the film, just the stuff I remember from the brief portions that I actually caught. Maybe sprinkle in some vague memories from some other parts I think came from that movie. Ya know, the good parts.

The first of these movies to cross my path is Troy. Watched this bad boy after eating an enormous burrito and prior to watching the Rose Bowl. Naps ensued…

Here’s what I remember… Agamemnon, Brian Cox, is kinda a dick to Achilles, a long hippie blonde styled up Brad Pitt, but I cant remember why. I think he was just a dick in general. Then a war starts. If i hadn’t read the Iliad, I wouldn’t know why. Then I fell asleep for a while…

When I woke up it was my favorite part. Achilles is fighting Hector, Eric Bana. These dudes rock some totally sweet moves on each other. I thought to myself that this might actually be how the most badass of the badass fought 2500 years ago. The best part was the Brad Pitt Super Punch. He somehow takes off from the ground for this overhand right with an enormous sword. Completely impossible, but awesome in the moment. Then a rock trips Hector. Then Hector dies.

The next part is pretty epic too. Brad Pitt ties Eric Bana’s dead legs together and drags him around. They didn’t show this on TNT, but I remember it being awesome. I think later the king of Troy came and begged for Hectors body. Then something about a Trojan Horse… I dont know, I fell back asleep until Wisconsin was up 7-0.

So… That’s my review of Troy. I don’t remember it being that good. It goes into the rankings at #1.

Nap Movies:
1. Troy

Got any Nap Movies for me to add to the list? Got an opinion of Troy? Remember that Super Punch? Epic!

I’m really excited about this post. I don’t know if you know this about me, but I’m as much of a fan of trailers as I am of movies. Its a really great relationship because as movies go into the theater, just as many trailers come out. Only the beauty is trailers are free!

And! they come out at all sorts of weird times during the week which will prove quite useful for blogging. I’m guessing I’m going to be all like “hmmmm, i wonder what I should blog about today” then I’ll wander to some other far more successful movie blog where they talk about movie news, like casting and stuff, and I’ll be like “That news is… AWESOME!” And then, I shall steal that news for my own purposes.

I’LL REFERENCE MY SOURCE! I’m not a complete asshole. I promise I will. Anyway… lets get started.

Unfortunately, to get a list going, I have to include at least 3 movies… so these might be brief, but they are how I actually feel.

    Season of the Witch

I LOVE Nic Cage. I may live to regret telling all you people that, but its true. It might be an absurd masochism or something in which I insist upon hurting myself by watching his movies, but I always find something to like in them. Knowing, for example, I like it, great long cuts. See. Silver Lining. I also like witches and stuff. Ray Winstone is pretty badass too. I’d give this 2/3 Face-Off Excitement.

    The Dilemma

I’m a huge Vince Vaughn fan as well. Well… maybe less so. Not a big fan of his various Christmas movies. You know he has more than one, right? Ok, but I also really love Wynona Rider. I mean, she is super hot when she’s being the sexy one. Take Mr. Deeds for example. I haven’t forgotten the cute stuff she did in that. Also, she was spock’s mother. But… for some reason I’m not super excited about this. I give this 1/2 “Live Long and Prosper”

    The Green Hornet

I’ve been looking forward to this one for a while. Kato is totes badass, but forget about that… We’re talking GODDAMN MICHEL GONDRY here! Michel Gondry. I love every one of his movies, even the ones where all the cool indie kids like to say “ugh, I dont like that one as much, its weird”. I like those ones too. I wish I was writing an article about Michel Gondry. I would now, if I didn’t have anything better to do. Gotta finish this article. I give it 2 Mos Def’s and a Elijah Wood of Excitement!

So, that being said, here is the initial anticipation rankings:
3. The Dilemma
2. Season of the Witch
1. The Green Hornet

What do you think about these movies? Have any movies you are anticipating? Do you like Nic Cage or Michel Gondry? Take offense to me calling you a “cool indie kid”? Let me know!

Hey there kiddies.

It’s Tueday, that means it’s DVD day. I always feel like I should call it Blue-Ray Day now that I don’t buy DVDs anymore. Maybe it’s “Update your Netflix” day, because these new movies are available, finally. I figure, what better way to help you out than give you a weekly ranking of the DVDs that are being released this day complete with recommendation. There are quite a few today, so here you go!

6. The Last Exorcist
5. Case 39
4. Dinner For Schmucks
3. Machete
2. Howl
1. Catfish

Here’s a top 10 list of older movies that you may not have realized it, but are being released on Blue-Ray for the first time or in special edition today:

10. Backdraft
9. Austin Powers Trilogy
8. Coraline 3D
7. Once Upon a Time in Mexico
6. El Mariachi/Desperado
5. LA Confidential
4. JFK
3. The Wizard of Oz
2. The Matrix
1. Blade Runner

Pete Postlethwaite past away this morning, and though its a rather sad way to start off our new format, he was and is one of my favorite actors that I would always forget til i saw him. He will be missed and I would be really amiss if I didn’t give you my list of Postlethwaite films and open up the floor for discussion. If you loved his work, drop your list in the comments. For more info on the rest of his films and TV work, see his IMDB page here.

So, here’s my Pete Postlethwaite Rankings:
10. James and the Giant Peach
9. The Omen
8. The Lost World: Jurassic Park 2
7. Amistad
6. The Last of the Mohicans
5. Alien 3
4. Romeo + Juliet
3. Inception
2. The Usual Suspects
1. In the Name of the Father

I put In the Name of the Father above Inception and Usual Suspects because it so distinctly describes his career, even though I like those other movies better. I really love him in Romeo+Juliet; such an underrated performance on this list. I haven’t seen The Town yet, but I hear its a really great performance as well.

What do you think? Think Kobayashi should should be #1? Have you seen any of the Postlethwaite movies that I haven’t?

Hey gang. Just wanted to give you an update on the game we played last spring. Thanks to your voting, we were able to successfully create a proper rankings of the movies of these two actors in comparison to one another. I think there is a lot to be debated here, but that’s for you to do, and me to then follow through and address your concerns.

At this point, the only way to change these rankings is to voice your opinion either here or with an @ reply on twitter to @themoviefight.
